Magnolia tree growing advice

15th March, 2023

Magnolia trees are one of the most beautiful trees to grow in gardens. They are prized for their large, showy flowers and stately form. Follow these tips to ensure your magnolia tree grows to its full potential.

Choose the right location. Magnolia trees need full sun to partial shade to thrive. They will not flower well if they do not get enough sunlight. When choosing a location, make sure the tree will not be overshadowed by taller trees or buildings.

Prepare the soil. Magnolia trees prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil. If your soil is not well-drained, consider planting the tree in a raised bed. You can also improve drainage by mixing organic matter, such as compost, into the soil.

Water regularly. Magnolia trees need at least 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or from watering. Drip irrigation is a good way to water a magnolia tree, as it provides a slow, steady supply of water to the roots.

Fertilize annually. Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10 (this is  10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium), to the soil around the tree in early spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the amount to apply.

Prune selectively. Magnolia trees do not require a lot of pruning, but you may need to do some shaping to remove wayward branches. Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins.

With a little care, your magnolia tree will be a cherished addition to your garden for many years to come.
