How to grow rhubarb

Rhubarb is a versatile and easy-to-grow plant that can be used to make delicious pies, crumbles and jam. If you're thinking about adding this plant to your garden, here are a few tips to get you started.

When to Plant: Rhubarb can be planted in the spring or autumn.

Where to Plant: Rhubarb prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

How to Plant: Rhubarb roots (called crowns) can be planted directly in the ground or in a large container. If you're planting in the ground, dig a hole that's twice the size of the root ball and mix in some compost. Plant the crowns so that the buds are pointing up and cover with soil. Water well.

If you're planting in a container, choose a pot that's at least 45cm / 18 inches wide and fill it with a high-quality potting mix. Plant the crowns so that the buds are pointing up and water well.

Care: Once your rhubarb is planted, it doesn't require much care. Water it regularly, especially during dry periods, and fertilize it once a year with a balanced fertilizer. Rhubarb is a perennial plant, so it will come back year after year, with new stalks to harvest.

Harvesting: You can start harvesting rhubarb when the stalks are at least 12 inches long. To harvest, cut the stalks at the base with a sharp knife. Be sure to leave at least two stalks per plant so that it can continue to produce. The large leaves can be chopped off and put in the compost bin.
