Fast growing garden trees

When it comes to finding the best trees for your garden, there are many factors to consider. But if you're looking for fast-growing trees that will add some quick shade or privacy, here are five good options. (The trees are not native so not suitable for growing in woodland restoration projects).

Weeping willow

The weeping willow is a classic choice for a fast-growing tree. They can reach a height of 12 metres / 40 feet or more, and be a full size, mature tree within 15 years. Weeping willows are also relatively tolerant of poor soils and wet conditions, making them a good option for areas that are prone to flooding and damp ground. A weeping willow is a short-lived tree, and they typically last for 40 to 70 years.

Paulownia tomentosa

Paulownia, also known as Foxglove Tree or Empress Tree, is another fast-growing tree that can reach heights of 10–25 m (33–82 ft) tall. It's often used as a shade tree or for privacy. It is one of the fastest growing deciduous trees on earth. Paulownia is relatively drought-tolerant, making it a good choice for areas that don't get a lot of rainfall, and its large leaves absorb pollutants. In the first few years it looks like a woody sunflower, with big leaves, and it can shoot up in a similar fashion to sunflowers. Saplings can grow up to 185cm / 6ft in a single year. As the tree matures, the leaves become smaller. Before leaves emerge in spring, the tree becomes full of large pink foxglove like flowers. It is a good choice for a treeless urban area, where a tree is badly needed, as fast as possible.

Silver maple

The silver maple is a popular choice for gardens and landscaping. It's a fast-growing tree that can reach heights of 100 feet or more. Silver maples are also tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions, making them a versatile choice for many different gardens. A 10-year-old sapling will stand about 8 m (26 ft) tall.

Red maple

The red maple is another fast-growing tree that can reach heights of 100 feet or more. Like the silver maple, it's also tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions. Red maples are known for their beautiful autumn foliage, making them a popular choice for gardens and landscaping. Seedlings can grow 30 cm (0.98 ft) in their first year and up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) each year for the next few years, making it a fast grower. The leaves of the Red Maple are toxic to horses, so the tree should not be planted in any rural setting where horses have access to.

Sweetgum

The sweetgum is a fast-growing, drought resistant tree that can reach heights of 100 feet or more. Sweetgums are tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions (full sun position is best), making them a versatile choice for many different gardens. Sweetgums are also known for their beautiful Fall foliage, making them a popular choice for gardens and landscaping. It was introduced to Britain in 1681. After the first year a growth spurt will begin, with the tree then growing 60 to 90cm per year.
