Types of cucumber

There are more than just the green, watery cucumbers, in heat shrunk plastic, that you’re used to seeing in the supermarket (if available). In fact, there are a variety of cucumber varieties that come in different shapes, sizes, and colours. Here are 10 cucumber varieties that you may not have seen before. Growing different varieties of cucumber, literally means you can have a cucumber for every occasion!

1. Armenian cucumber – This cucumber is longer and thinner than the traditional cucumber, and has a milder flavour.

2. Burpless cucumber – This cucumber is easier to digest than other cucumbers, and has a slightly sweeter flavour.

3. English cucumber – This cucumber is longer and thinner than the traditional cucumber, and has a milder flavour.

4. Kirby cucumber – This cucumber is small and round, with a thick skin. It is often used in pickling.

5. Lemon cucumber – This cucumber is small and round, with a yellow/green colour and a tart flavour.

6. Mini cucumber – This cucumber is about the size of a thumb, and is often used in salads or as a garnish.

7. Persian cucumber – This cucumber is shorter and fatter than the traditional cucumber, and has a milder flavor.

8. Seedless cucumber – This cucumber is, as its name implies, seedless. It is longer and thinner than the traditional cucumber.

9. Sturtevant’s mini cucumber – This cucumber is even smaller than the mini cucumber, and is about the size of a grape.

10. Winged bean cucumber – This cucumber is actually a bean, not a cucumber. It is long and thin, with wings on either side.
