Plants for an Anglo Saxon garden

The centuries before William Conqueror invaded with his army from Normandy, in 1066, was the Anglo Saxon period. You will most likely have read about their battles with Vikings, their longhouses, decorative arts and illuminated gospels, but you most likely have never considered what sort of plants they used at this time. Below are 10 plants that were used by people during the era, and would make an interesting border, in a garden of anyone interested in this period of English history. Also, great if you are part of a re-enactment society, and want to use some plants at an event.

1. Chamomile - Chamomile was commonly used for medicinal purposes, especially for its calming and digestive properties. It was also used to make tea and as a key ingredient in skin care products due to its anti-inflammatory compounds.

2. Sage - Sage was a multipurpose herb in Anglo Saxon times. It was used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Sage is also known for its purifying properties and was used to cleanse the air and spaces.

3. Lavender - Lavender was known for its relaxation properties and soothing scents. It was used to make perfumes and to help people fall asleep. Lavender was also used as a key ingredient in skin care and hair care products due to its antifungal and antiseptic properties.

4. Garlic - Garlic was a staple ingredient in Anglo-Saxon cuisine. It was used for its strong flavour and antibacterial properties. Garlic was also believed to have medicinal properties and was used to treat a variety of ailments, including infections and digestive issues.
