Winter Walks

If you have over indulged over Christmas and would like to walk off some calories well away from the crowded January sales here a some great places to enjoy a winter walk. All the locations that have been selected are close to urban centres, making them easy and quick to get to.

North West

Formby Nature Reserve - Owned by the National Trust, a peaceful pine forest famed for its Red Squirrels next to a long dramatic beach with sand dunes.

North East

Chopwell Woods is a tranquil 350 hectare woodland on the outskirts of Gateshead, on Tyneside. The forest is home to Otters, Roe Deer, Fox and Badger.

Midlands

Sutton Park is a patchwork of open heath, wetlands, forest and lakes stretched over 2,000 acres located close to Sutton Coldfield. It has an extensive network of well maintained paths and cattle and wild horses graze openly throughout the park.

South West

The Avon Wildlife Trust have created a new 3 mile wildlife walk around its Clapton Moor Nature Reserve and the surrounding area in the Gordano Valley.

Wales

Cardiff Bay Wetlands is situated on the northern shore of Cardiff Bay. It is an 8 hectare reserve which can be viewed from a raised boardwalk. Take your binoculars!

Scotland

Holyrood Park is home to the famous King Arthurs Seat close to the centre of Edinburgh. The park has some great walks and dramatic views of Edinburgh can be enjoyed from the top of the hill.

Northern Ireland

Belfast Lough is an oasis of countryside only 10 minutes from Belfast City Centre. The Lagoon is managed by the RSPB, which has created an ideal birdwatching habitat.
