Trevarno Gardens, Cornwall

BRIEF HISTORY
Trevarno dates back to 1246 when it was owned by Randulphus de Trevarno and since then has been owned by several notable families including 4 generations of the Bickford-Smiths who owned it from 1874 - 1994. They were the descendants of the inventor of the Miners Safety Fuse which saved many lives around the world. In 1994 the estate, consisting of approximately 750 acres was put up for sale and purchased by Radiocode Clocks Ltd and in 1998 the gardens opened for the first time on a daily basis and now attracts around 70,000 visitors per year.

HORTICULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS
Like many Cornish Gardens it is at its best in Spring with bluebells in the Beech Woods from mid April to May. There are many camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons around the garden. The garden covers 35 acres and is basically Victorian with the pinetum still having plants from the Bickford-Smith planting of 30,000 different trees and shrubs in 1883. The Great Lawn is ideal for picnics and there is a large Bamboo area, Bog Garden and serpentine Yew Tunnel as well as an Italian Garden. Trevarno is also home of the National Daffodil Collection Showgarden with over 2,500 varieties flowering from mid December to mid May.
