RHS Plant Finder 2011-2012

The 25th edition of the RHS Plant Finder, the ultimate gardeners’ guide to UK plant suppliers, is now available, and contains 3, 500 new plants.
Compiled and published by the Royal Horticultural Society, the UK’s foremost gardening charity, the 2011-2012 RHS Plant Finder, lists more than 70,000 plants and full details for more than 560 suppliers, making it the most comprehensive directory of plants that are available to buy from UK and Irish nurseries.

Janet Cubey, Editor-in-Chief of the RHS Plant Finder, says: “A plant appearing in the book for the first time with quite a few nurseries selling it often indicates what the industry believes will be good sellers.”

The most popular new plants listed by nurseries in the 2011-12 edition are:

1. Actaea pachypoda 'Misty Blue'
2. Geranium 'Midnight Clouds'
3. Erodium 'Freedom'
4. Chasmanthium latifolium 'River Mist'
5. Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus Superior'
6. Filipendula 'Red Umbrellas'
7. Geranium 'Fay Anna'
8. Heuchera 'Magnum'

The book also reveals that the genera with the most new introductions over the past year, have been Iris (237 new introductions), Primula (210 introductions), Hosta (149 introductions) and Dahlia (131 introductions).

Janet Cubey continues: “We’re used to seeing high numbers of new introductions of hostas and irises each year, reflecting the amount of breeding work in these areas, particularly in America, but it’s interesting to see the rise in primula and, especially, dahlia introductions this year. This reflects the increase in demand for dahlias from the gardening public and highlights the growing popularity of these flowers that we’ve seen at our shows, including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in the last couple of years.”
