James May to Create a Top Garden at Chelsea

21st March, 2009

TV presenter James May will create a small urban garden out of Plasticine andplants at the 2009 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden will form part of a BBC 2 series, James May’s Toy Stories*.

The concept behind the 5m by 7m garden is to explore the garden as a form of art – a key theme at the 2009 Show. The structure and ‘sculptural’ plants will be made out of Plasticine and real plants will also be included. James will be working with a family of helpers to create the garden and gleaning advice from plant designers, including Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins, experts and artists.

Speaking about the initiative, RHS Chelsea Flower Show Manager, Alex

Baulkwill, said: “We’re open to new ideas and concepts at Chelsea and

always looking at ways to give visitors new experiences and push boundaries, as well as including more traditional designs.

“I know James has been researching how plants and gardens have been depicted by acclaimed artists throughout history and I’m looking forward to seeing how he translates this in his garden.” James’ garden is one of 40 gardens at the 2009 Show and he will have 10 days to build it in the grounds of the Royal Hospital. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by Marshalls, is the ultimate event in the gardening year, showcasing the very best in horticulture. The show takes place between 19-23 May and tickets always sell out. Book now to
