Having been brought up a 5 minute walk from a Hadrian Wall Turret and my middle school and high school both directly on the line of the wall, it has always fascinated me. It remains stretches from Wallsend in the east of Newcastle Upon Tyne, through the centre of the city, about 3/4 mile to the north of the Tyne riverbank, it then goes westwards going through the suburbs (with bits of wall still standing amongst ordinary streets) out into the Tyne valley then continues westwards righ over to the Solway Firth on the west coast. In total 73.5 miles / 117km's in length. It was started in about 122 A.D and finished in about six years Quite a building project!!!
The best preserved parts of the wall are in West Northumberland. Which is wild and full of atmosphere. It doesn't matter if the weather is awful when you visit, as this just makes the landscape even more spectacular!
Here is a quick vid, I made of a trip up onto the wall a few days ago. There'll be plenty more of these videos on the site in the coming months covering gardening, nature and the environment, So keep checking back for updates. There wasn't any planning that went into this vid, it was just a quick trial really, so excuse the brief amount of info and when I said horizantal, I did of course mean DIAGONAL!!! (What a dipstick I am). However, it doe's give a good feel for the raw wildness of the area.
