Greenbelt Watch

Over the next few years many thousands of acres of precious greenbelt will disappear forever, due to a booming population. This page is to show people outside your immediate area whats happening to your local greenbelt. You can send images to gardenandgreen@hotmail.co.uk.

We start off with our own contribution - the 'Great Park' in Newcastle, close to G&G HQ, pristine farmland is currently being turned into thousands of homes, new roads, supermarket, business park etc. The developers sell the place as being in a rural setting! Surely they mean WAS in a rural setting.

6th May 2008 - CPRE (Council Protection for Rural England) issue report that reveals that since 1997 an area of Greenbelt land the size of a small city in total, or 1,100 full size football pitches EACH YEAR has been built on. More

22nd August 2008 - Conservatives 'favourite think tank' advocate mass concreting of the greenbelt. More

19th February 2009 - Greenbelt south of Huddersfield threatened with 7,000 new homes. More

Newcastle -This was countryside on the edge of a city, locals enjoyed dog walking, kite flying, cycling etc. Now its fenced off, out of bounds and being transformed beyond recognition.
