With the focus in recent years on Climate Change
it is easy to forget the huge logging of the worlds
rainforests.Often known as the 'Lungs of the World'
places like the Amazon Rainforest have lost
hundreds of thousands of acres in recent decades.
Rainforests are home to one of the most diverse
range of flora and fauna with many species still
being discovered. Once the forests are cleared for
cattle ranching and Palm Oil groves, their unique
eco-system vanishes for ever and cannot be replaced.
The World Land Trust was set up in response to
the Rainforests being chopped down unsustainably,
and since its inception has bought over
350,00 acres of tropical forests, coastal steppes
and wetlands. The charity is currently focussing on
India, Ecudor and Brazil. In India they are purchasing land to create a wildlife corridor for the
threatened Indian Elephant. Ecuador has lost 80% of its tropical rainforest, so the Trust is attempting to save what is left. In Brazil only 7% of the Atlantic rainforests remain, so the WLT is engaged in buying land around the Guapi Assu reserve to protect and bolster what is left.
The great news in this depressing story is that, the more acres that are bought the safer what is left will be, so future generations can live in a world that is not stripped of all its beauty.
You can buy acres of land from the World Land Trust for £50 an acre, with a minimum acreage purchase at £25 for 1/2 an acre.
So while you might dream of owning rolling acres of Mayfair and Chelsea, this is slightly less expensive option, and would also make a great Christmas present for people who love nature and want to do something to prevent some of the worlds most precious habitats from being destroyed.
You can buy acres of habitat here.
