Castle Howard in North Yorkshire Goes Renewable
24th June 2009
Ecovision is the UK's leading expert in the design and installation of heat pumps and Simon Howard wants to use renewable energy to heat his magnificent house, Castle Howard, so together they have come up with the perfect solution. This involves using the beautiful lake as the heat source which will provide sufficient heat to warm the house and the hot water. The lake is to be drained whilst the coils are laid in place and then re-filled.

General Manager for Ecovision in the North of England, Dirk van Lennep has been instrumental in making this happen, he commented, "Ecovision have been installing heat pumps in all types of houses, flats and public sector buildings throughout the UK. It is particularly exciting to be able to offer an excellent solution to such a large, historic property like Castle Howard. What Ecovision is now seeing is both air source and ground source heat pumps offering a cost and energy efficient solution to new build and retrofit properties alike. Castle Howard is unique in that it has large lakes close by in which we can submerge our ground loops. In this way Ecovision made the best use of the natural resources at Castle Howard to radically reduce energy bills and CO2 emissions."
Simon Howard commented " Replacing our oil fired boilers for heating and hot water has been a target for us for sometime. We looked at all the alternatives available and ultimately decided that the most environmentally friendly system would be to use ground source heat. Using a lake that is close to the house makes the project extremely feasible both from the financial and practical viewpoints. The resulting system will mean a huge improvement in our carbon footprint and a reduction in heating and hot water costs. I am extremely excited about the project and I hope that we will be able to share the understanding of this infant technology with not only our 200,000+ visitors, but also local schools, colleges and universities. The use of this technology in a historic house of the size of Castle Howard is, I believe, a first and I am thrilled to be involved in the continuing evolvement of this magnificent house."
