Britain's Oldest Nature Conservation Volunteer Passes Away

27th March, 2009

Alfred Burgess was born on 27 October 1904 in Accrington, Lancashire. From childhood, he was passionate about the countryside. The hours he spent close to nature soon sparked an interest in butterflies.

Alfred retired to Devon after working for many years as a civil engineer. Settling in Teignmouth he became an active supporter of Butterfly Conservation. For 22 years Alfred recorded butterfly sightings across the county - totalling an amazing 3100 records. At 102, he was still sending in observations of November-flying Red Admirals.

Alfred Burgess sadly died on 18 January 2009. Butterfly Conservation thank him and his family for the contribution he was able to make to securing that future generations can continue to enjoy butterflies in the British countryside.
