Brits Get a Taste For an American Classic - Blueberries

4th June 2009

The Blueberry Bush is an all American favourite and a native to that continent. Generations of Americans have took full advantage of this gift from Mother Nature and used the berries in muffins, pancakes, jams and juice.

The dark berried plants are now becoming increasingly common here in the UK, as the grow your own boom continues and gardeners look for new soft fruits to grow alongside more traditional favourites such as Strawberries and Raspberries. They are both nutrionally rich and have antioxidant properties.

Blueberry Bush Growing Tips

* They aren't to keen on animal manure, so do not add to the soil.
* Consider using some fruit netting to prevent garden birds eating your harvest!
* Keep the plants well watered throughout the summer months.
* Prune after leaf fall in the autumn. Remove leafy growth at the base of the plant as this will not priduce anything.
